The dangers of industrial disease

Everybody has the right to work in a pleasant environment, which is safe, clean and free of dangers and hazards, but unfortunately some professions still carry a moderate to high level of risk, which is often unavoidable in the course of duty. Occupations involving machinery, building materials, chemicals or blades are still considered to be high-risk and therefore employees need to ascertain the working conditions and be adequately prepared for any obstacles or industrial disease they may encounter.

Industrial disease can be defined as a condition, illness or injury resulting from exposure to hazardous conditions or materials, but with this in mind, it’s important to remember that employers have a duty of care to their employees and also a responsibility to provide working conditions that have been risk-assessed and vigorously monitored over a period of time. This means the risk of injury or disease should be kept to an absolute minimum, with regular checks being performed to protect everyone involved.

Some forms of industrial disease have been well documented including conditions associated with asbestos and lead exposure, like lung problems, pleural thickening and cancer. Of course, there are a range of other serious afflictions caused by exposure to toxins and these include carbon monoxide or gas poisoning, skin damage or eczema, various cancers and breathing difficulties like asthma. There can be life-threatening effects to breathing in dangerous dusts or gases, or through something more minor like exposure to poor air circulation or bad ventilation.

To reduce the dangers of occupational diseases, employees have a responsibility to ensure they wear any protective clothing offered and that they carry out their job description as carefully and meticulously as possible. In the event of developing a condition that is believed to be work related, medical advice should be sought and adhered to immediately. Then if the medical expert agrees that the cause is linked to work, further entitlement to benefits, services or treatment, can be looked into and achieved if appropriate.  If you have been affected, support and advice is available, so please click here to learn more
