Checking out your potential employers the safe way

I run my own small business and I have to say that I have been stung in the past. When someone joins a large multi-national business there are normally all sorts of ways in which the employer can run background checks on their potential employees, but that is, or has traditionally been a very difficult thing to do if you own your own small business. My last employer turned out to be a thief and I found out after I had lost half of my stock that he had a criminal record which he didn’t disclose in his application. Because of this I decided to take no more risks and I started to do some research online about possible ways in which I could defence against this in future.

I came across a great company which promised to guide me through the process of background checks, and they indicated that they would be able to help me conduct a Social Security Number Search. Of course, this would be great because it would mean being able to check up on my employers past activities. This is nothing that I would have like to do in the past, but after my recent experiences I wasn’t willing to take the risk again.

My other concern was the potential cost of such an exercise but I was very pleased to discover that this was actually a pretty cheap means of finding out about the people you work with. I don’t think you can put a price on feeling secure, but I obviously had to be mindful of my costs.

I am now employing two new staff and we are all getting along well. I feel happy knowing that I have run an employment history check on them both which means I don’t have to have eyes in the back of my head!
