Construction Site Accidents
The government responded last year to the Rita Donaghy 2009 report which looked into the deaths and injuries which occurred in construction within the UK. The original report by Donaghy was called ‘One Death too many’, and looked into the actual causes of fatal accidents in the construction world. The study focused on UK construction over the last twenty five years and looked deeply into the causation of all of the deaths during this time. Donaghy came up with twenty eight suggested changes to the law and it appears that the government in their wisdom have decided to accept twenty three of the recommendations. These twenty three will now become amendments to regulations or new laws within their own right.
It is staggering to think that during the first six months of 2009 18 people working in construction lost their lives on the job. On top of this, three ordinary people just going about their day to day lives were also killed due to construction related accidents. These figures are actually very low in comparison to the rest of Europe, but despite this, it is felt that the number of injuries and deaths could still be reduced significantly.
Rita Donaghy was asked to carry out this report as part of an independent inquiry. As the former chair of the concillation service, ACAS she was thought to be the ideal person to carry out the report. The inquiry in particular reviewed work carried out by the Health and Safety Executive which looked into the causes of these accidents at work.
Although the figures of injuries and deaths caused whilst on construction sites continues to drop, there are still thousands of accidents occurring each year. If you are involved in an accident then it is crucial you take sound legal advice about any possible compensation claim.
